I am happy to announce the addition of agentic AI, powered by BMC HelixGPT, to our BMC Helix platform. We are beginning a journey to transform enterprise IT work, starting with agentic bots for service management and operations.

Agentic bots take generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI) beyond the “call and response” mechanism familiar to many users from their early interactions with GenAI. BMC HelixGPT now powers a set of bots that work autonomously, in a number of different roles, which include task automation, curation of knowledge content, proactive provision of insights from data, evaluation of change risks, and more.

BMC HelixGPT Knowledge Curator Enhances and Updates Knowledge

Effective support of complex service environments requires good knowledge sharing between support and operations professionals. Furthermore, with effective delivery of that knowledge to the users who need it, when they need it, people are more likely to find solutions to their issues and inquiries, improving operational outcomes and reducing the burden on the support organization.

But there is a challenge: While many organizations have sought to implement effective knowledge management practices, this is often very challenging in large and complex environments. In practice, many knowledge management initiatives have suffered from a lack of article quality and consistent coverage, and content may become duplicated or obsolete. When stakeholders lose confidence in the reliability and availability of knowledge, their engagement with the knowledge management system is also impacted, and people become less inclined to participate in using, creating, or improving knowledge.

BMC HelixGPT Knowledge Curator is a new agentic bot that uses Gen AI to solve these problems. BMC HelixGPT Insight Finder Democratizes Data Insights

The ongoing digital transformation of industries is creating ever more complexity in the technology landscape of enterprises. In turn, the tools used to discover, run, manage, and support those technologies are receiving and generating more data than ever.

However, maximizing the potential of complex data has traditionally been the domain of data scientists and reporting technology experts, which can leave stakeholders waiting in line for data insights. Additionally, data experts may not have significant experience with the domain-specific context of the requests coming into their team, leading to multiple iterations or missed opportunities to surface valuable insights.

Every user becomes a reporting expert. By proactively providing them with significant data, BMC HelixGPT Insight Finder prompts users to explore higher–priority subjects first, ensuring their efforts are directed toward the most important and effective topics.

BMC HelixGPT Employee Navigator Improves Enterprise Productivity

Traditional ITSM tools have done a great job automating workflows and fulfilling service requests for supported end users. However, as business operations become increasingly complex, demand is growing for a more straightforward, intuitive way for employees to find information and services quickly, across departments, enabling them to stay focused on more productive tasks.

BMC HelixGPT Employee Navigator is an agentic AI bot focused on those supported users of services and systems. Consider this example: An employee encounters a problem with an application. Instead of submitting a ticket and waiting for IT to resolve the issue, they simply talk directly with the agentic bot in natural language—perhaps simply stating “I’m having trouble with this application.” BMC HelixGPT immediately responds with troubleshooting steps or, if needed, automatically creates a service request for the IT team.

BMC HelixGPT Change Risk Advisor Balances Risk and Speed in DevOps

The most effective way to manage change, and its impact, is to proactively analyze risks, and thus avoid making changes that are likely to cause an incident. However, the current change management process typically involves manual analysis of risk, and lacks real-time operational data for accurate risk predictions.

BMC HelixGPT Change Risk Advisor is an agentic bot that uses Gen AI to reduce change failures in complex systems by surfacing risky changes which might impact a service. This information is crucial for balancing risk and speed in DevOps. The agentic AI bot de-risks DevOps by catching unforeseen risks in real time using precise analysis of ITSM and IT operations management (ITOM) data. DevOps and SRE teams can follow up with questions and get responses for a given change request so they can continue to deploy quickly and with confidence, only delaying their push when a potential failure is detected.

This is a story about the many different routes to automation.

This blog series will guide you on your digital transformation and digital business automation journey.

It is no secret that all businesses today find themselves on a digital transformation journey.  A journey that will depend heavily on the right automation strategy, skills, technology, and a solid plan to build and evolve the business.

Fact is “No business wants to automate less!”

First, I want us to think about mazes, labyrinths and puzzles…all challenges that people love.

A maze is filled with dead ends, loops and monsters. Often there are clues that help you find your way and alleviate frustration, but the idea is to get lost (Innovation Mindset) a few times before figuring out the terrain and finding your way.

People just love the challenge of beating the maze…it could go well for you, or it could be an adventure gone wrong.

To master the maze you need a strategy, knowledge about the maze, you need to get the right team with the right skills and much more. 

Before jumping headfirst into the maze, it is best to know where you are.

Look for alternative entry points and decide on a partner to join you on your journey.  It is also important to keep track of routes that led to dead ends and routes that are yet to be travelled.  Along the way you will collect rewards, or interim successes that will lead to the ultimate prize…beating the Maze!

Automation works in much the same way.

Where to start your automation journey?

If we begin to unpack the automation opportunity, we quickly see that a sound strategy with a human-centric approach is key to creating new value and realizing growth. Only about 15 to 20% of what could be automated has been automated in businesses that claim to have embraced automation. Make it about the people and not about the technology and you will succeed. This is important to remember as we engage and evolve our automation strategy.

When we look at the business landscape, we can quickly understand why businesses today, more than ever, need to build automation into their technology stack in a purpose driven and well architected way.

The customer behaviour and expectation has changed…customers want it perfect, right now and expect miracles at the drop of a penny…and businesses want to deliver on these expectations…

Business landscapes are intricately intertwined and interconnected both internally and externally…regardless the industry vertical.
It seems like the automation answer can then be simple…but it is not…because every business is on a different point of maturity on their automation journey. This position of maturity will define how and where the business will look at and embrace different types of automation.

It’s not only about saving costs, but also very often about creating new value and differentiated customer experiences that puts the business ahead of its competition – a great example of this is Sixty60 vs the rest – being quick, early and efficient with a customer-centric solution gives you an advantage that is hard to lose.

Maturity scale for automation

Automation goals are different based on the business area and business drivers.  It is also affected by where an organization sits on the automation maturity scale.

Many surveys today find that organisations have already embarked on their digital transformation journeys, and it is now, more than ever, important to lay the right automation platform foundation to ensure that this journey is sustainable and can scale.

The goal of the ultimate intelligent innovation needs the right foundational blocks in place, and it is important for organisations to clearly outline where they fit in this maturity scale.

There are essentially 5 levels towards intelligent automation that can be highlighted as follows:

Foundation – A Tools Driven focus

Here we find application of scripts, islands of tools and tasks level focus to apply automation

Optimize – Process Driven

Organizations start to focus on optimized business processes, defined automation methods and standards

Efficient – RPA Driven

Here the focus is rule based, analytics driven and starts to leverage pattern analytics based on underlying datasets.  At this point we see organisations establishing their Automation Centre of Excellence – a critical component for your automation journey.

Intelligent – AI Driven

In this ultimate maturity level, it is all about the business focus and the human focus.  It takes model-driven decisions, it is self-learning, and it combines human and machine for value driven solutions. 

At this point it is crystal clear that automation never ends and that a continuous innovation cycle needs to exist to continuously move different parts of the organisations up in the maturity stack.

Barriers and avoiding or overcoming them

Just like a maze, the automation journey can be filled with dead ends and roundabouts.

Some barriers are real, and some are perceived as barriers but and are in fact not barriers at all.

Developers should be able to leverage modern programming integration methods and language to deliver jobs-as-code where automation becomes part of the application.

Is the CMDB relevant?

Configuration management databases have been around for a couple of decades.

For many very painful as the promise of the golden truth never realised.

The CMDB was first introduced in the early 1980’s with the introduction of ITIL – organisations realised they had to keep track of their ever-changing IT Assets.

The CMDB went through a few iterations and evolved from Asset Register to Configuration Management and finally the understanding configuration relationships (ITIL V3) in the mid 2000’s.  For the first time it was possible to have a documented understanding of the interaction between applications, software, hardware, and components.  Understanding impact and dependencies between these assets gave organisations a clear view of the IT landscape and how everything fits together.

But the hype cycle turned to disillusionment from around 2010 when organisations realised that maintaining the CMDB was a near impossibility – especially if this was done in a manual fashion.  People lost faith in the data that CMDB’s produced – it was inaccurate and out of date.

But does this mean the CMDB is past it’s sell by date and we need something new?

With the introduction of new technology and services (virtual environments, containers, cloud hosting, SaaS services, micro services) the need for organisations to understand what makes up a service they are rendering to business, is critical.

Manually maintaining the CMDB will not suffice.  The complexity of IT and the rapid changing environments require a new approach. 

Enhances in automation technology such as automated configuration discovery and application dependency mapping makes it possible to maintain data accurately within the CMDB. 

Organisations can now depend on the information provided within the CMDB and consume this data in a wealth of related processes such as security, incident impact analysis, problem investigations, change planning, capacity optimisation, service monitoring, cloud migrations and many more.

We can now view technical and business services and the components that make up these services – critical information required in maturing other dependent processes.

How do we go about ensuring the CMDB in our organisation is relevant?

  • Define and assemble a project team
  • Obtain CMDB knowledge
  • Create and agree goals and mission
    • Understand Data Consumers and their requirements
    • Focus on critical services
    • Do not make the CMDB a dumping ground for all data
  • Define Data Strategy
    • Integrate automated Discovery and dependency mapping technologies
  • Define benefits and create a business case
  • Sponsorship – get executive sponsorship with clearly defined business outcomes and value
  • Keep on enhancing the CMDB – where and how the data originates from as well as who and what processes consumes the data.

The CMDB is here to stay – in fact it forms the centre of the ITIL universe.  For organisations to digitally mature, the CMDB has to form a key part and be a critical focus of their digital journey.

New Control-M integrations help every Autonomous Digital Enterprise deliver business outcomes faster with a single platform that manages application and data workflows in an optimized and scalable way.

 BMC, a global leader in software solutions for the Autonomous Digital Enterprise, today announced new cloud data services and open-source integrations for Control-M, its industry-leading application and data workflow orchestration platform. These new capabilities provide IT operations the ability to enable secure, automated self-service experiences for non-IT business partners.

“Leading organizations are choosing technology platforms that free employees across the company to collaborate and deliver innovation faster and securely,” said Joe Peppard, author, and former principal research scientist at MIT. “This breaks down silos and embeds IT capabilities into the fabric of the business.” 

New and updated capabilities include:

  • Strategic integrations with Apache Airflow, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and Google Cloud. This further expands the Control-M solution’s reach into the public cloud and open-source ecosystem to help customers orchestrate application and data workflows across the technologies they choose.
  • Enhanced Managed File Transfer and data orchestration features to help organizations seamlessly transfer files to and from cloud storage solutions with greater flexibility.
  • Advanced functionality and self-service interfaces to improve collaboration between IT operations, developers, data engineers, and business users.

The newest updates will help businesses strengthen their automation capabilities, operate more efficiently, deliver data-driven insights faster, and improve both self-service and collaboration between IT operations and their internal customers.

“For years we’ve relied on Control-M to help us orchestrate the application and data workflows that underpin our most critical business services,” said Jeffery Sanderson, CIO Scheduling Services Associate Manager at Accenture. “We are excited for the latest Control-M release because it’s going to help us maximize the value of our data by making it easier to orchestrate our data pipelines end-to-end, and to partner with our business users, giving them freedom to manage their own workflows while we continually enhance our orchestration framework.”

Taking a platform approach to application and data workflow orchestration

In a recent study1 commissioned by BMC, Forrester Consulting found that, “Upgrading to a single workflow solution will increase visibility and control, boost agility and speed, and help firms manage compliance regulations.” Companies need a single platform that can orchestrate data pipelines and application workflows at every stage, integrate with critical systems of record and modern technologies, and give IT operations robust capabilities to collaborate with business users through targeted experiences.

This update complements additional capabilities recently introduced to the Control-M solution, including Control-M Workflow Insights, the Control-M Python client, and the Control-M integrations with leading cloud data services.
